there are a lot of sites which draw their value mostly from their community. everything they are comes from accumulating external contributions ... imdb mobygames k5 etc.
this along with the monetary interest behind the site often results in locking in of users and content. will be interesting to see how this evolves. wikipedia with it's open content will hopefully take over a lot of this market.
